The History and Development of Education Management in Laos

Abstract

Education is a fundamental driver of social and economic progress in Laos. This article examines the historical evolution and development of educational management in the country, from its pre-historic origins to the modern era. Traditional Lao education was deeply rooted in monastic institutions, which played a pivotal role in preserving and transmitting knowledge and cultural heritage. During the French colonial period, Western-style education was introduced, leading to the establishment of formal state-run schools. Following independence in 1953, the Lao government, under a socialist framework, prioritized the continuous development of the education system. This included expanding access to education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all citizens.

Despite significant progress, the Lao education system continues to grapple with persistent challenges, such as educational disparities, the quality of teaching and learning, and a shortage of qualified educators. This study underscores that Laos has made considerable strides in adapting its education policies and practices to align with changing socio-economic conditions. Education is identified as a cornerstone for national development, instrumental in reducing inequalities and enhancing opportunities for individuals to achieve improved living standards.
